The firmware available in this download is specifically packaged for flashing SFF hard drive models EG0300FBVFL(300G 6G SAS 10K), EG0450FBVFM(450G 6G SAS 10K), EG0600FBVFP(600G 6G SAS 10K) and EG0900FBVFQ(900G 6G SAS 10K) in HP MSA 1040/2040 and P2000 G3 Storage Arrays.

Prerequisites:

WARNING! Do not cycle power or restart devices during a firmware update. If the update is interrupted or there is a power failure, the module could become inoperative. If this occurs, contact technical support. The module may need to be returned to the factory for reprogramming.

CAUTION: Before upgrading firmware, ensure that the storage system configuration is stable and is not being reconfigured or changed in any way. If configuration changes are in progress, monitor them and wait until they are completed before proceeding with the upgrade.

IMPORTANT: As with any firmware upgrade, it is a recommended best practice to ensure that you have a full backup prior to the upgrade.

NOTE:

  • Drives of the same model in the storage system must have the same firmware revision.
  • To install this firmware, you must download the firmware package from the HP website and save the file to your local filesystem.

Reboot Requirement:
Reboot is not required after installation for updates to take effect and hardware stability to be maintained.


Installation:

Installation instructions using Storage Management Utility (SMU):

  1. Place the downloaded firmware file in a temporary directory.
  2. Stop I/O to vdisks before starting the firmware update.
  3. Login to the SMU. For SMU [v2] select Tools > Update Firmware and for SMU [v3] go to System > Actions > Update Firmware > Update Disk Drives. A table displays currently installed firmware versions.
  4. Select the drives to update. Click Browse and select the firmware file to install.
  5. Click Install Disk Firmware File or if using SMU [v3] click on OK button.
  6. Wait for progress messages to specify that the update is complete.
  7. In the SMU display, verify that the proper firmware version appears for each disk drive.

Installation instructions using FTP: 

Using the SMU, prepare to use FTP:

  • Determine the network-port IP addresses of the system controllers.
  • Verify that the system FTP service is enabled.
  • Verify that the user you will login, has permission to use the FTP interface and manage access rights.

Obtain address of the disks:

  • Obtain the address of each disk to be loaded in the form (for example, 0:1 and 1:9) and obtain the firmware revision of each of these disks.
  • Determine which disks need to be updated based on the revision.
  • Note: In SMU [v2], the disk addresses are displayed by clicking on each enclosure in the Configuration View, present in the left pane and then selecting the desired disk. The needed data is displayed in the fields labeled 'Enclosure ID', 'Slot' and 'Revision'. In SMU [v3], System->Front and put cursor on disk,Tool tip shows the location of the disk.
  • Note: In the CLI, enter 'show disks'. The required information is displayed in the columns labeled 'Location' and 'Revision'.

Instructions for updating disk firmware using FTP:

  1. Stop all I/O to vdisks before starting the firmware update.
  2. Place the downloaded firmware file in a temporary directory.
  3. Open a command prompt (Windows) or a terminal window (UNIX), and navigate to the directory containing the firmware file to load.
  4. Enter ftp <ip address>. (For example: ftp 10.1.0.9)
  5. Login via FTP with username and password having manage access rights
  6. To update a specific drive, Type put filename disk:enclosure-ID:slot-number where filename is the new firmware image to load.
  7. It typically takes several minutes for the firmware update progress messages to be displayed in this FTP interface during this time. WARNING! Do not power cycle or restart during the firmware update as this can result in loss of capabilities for this unit.
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 for each disk to update in each enclosure.
  9. Using SMU or CLI verify that the proper firmware version appears for each disk drive.

  • Fixed background seek algorithm to allow self-test to run in the background.
  • Fixed problem with SMART temp warning on a full cache hit read workload.
  • Enabled just in time seek (JIT) in low queue depth mixed sequential and random read workloads. JIT is a power saving feature. Seek acceleration is reduced, so the head arrives just in time for the target block. Customer will see reduced power draw in this workload.
  • Fixed rare servo bug. Change servo processor to reset pending request for external memory accesses. Servo processor reset did not stop a pending external memory access request and could cause an error for an external memory access timeout. Use system-level reset of servo processor block that covers the external memory access timeout instead of internal servo processor soft reset.
