On HPE Gen10 or Gen10 Plus platforms in Legacy Boot Mode and configured with multiple of the HPE Smart Array SR Gen10 Controllers with Firmware Version 1.04 listed in the Scope section below, only a single option is presented for the boot controller.
Due to this, it is not possible to change which controller is the boot controller or otherwise modify the default boot controller.
SCOPE
Any HPE Gen10 or Gen10 Plus platform booting in Legacy BIOS mode, and configured with multiple of the following HPE Smart Array SR Gen10 Controllers with Firmware Version 1.04.
- HPE Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 (8 External Lanes/No Cache) 12G SAS PCIe Plug-in Controller (804398-B21)
- HPE Smart Array E208i-a SR Gen10 (8 Internal Lanes/No Cache) 12G SAS Modular Controller (804326-B21)

RESOLUTION
This issue has been addressed in the HPE Smart Array SR Gen10 Controller Firmware Version 1.34 (or later), available at the following URLs:
Important
Rather than setting the BIOS Boot Controller Order, the configuration must be made under the Smart Array HII setup. Select the desired boot controller, then select the option to "Set Bootable Device(s) for Legacy Boot Mode" in the menu. From there, choose "Select Bootable Logical Drive" and select the boot volume. Go back up a menu level, and choose "Number of OS bootable drives." This should be set to 1 on the boot controller. On all other controllers that are not desired to be booted from, this should be set to 0.
Example
- HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 (desired boot controller)
- Set Bootable Device(s) for Legacy Boot Mode
- Select Bootable Logical Drive (select the boot volume here)
- Number of OS bootable drives (set to 1 for the boot controller)
- Set Bootable Device(s) for Legacy Boot Mode
- HPE Smart Array P408e-p (non-boot controller)
- Set Bootable Device(s) for Legacy Boot Mode
- Number of OS bootable drives (set to 0 for non-boot controller)
- Set Bootable Device(s) for Legacy Boot Mode
Note: The above resolution instructions do not change the fact that only the first Smart Array controller detected during POST is shown in the Legacy Boot Mode controller order list.
