This package updates the I/O module firmware on HP D6000 Disk Enclosures attached to supported HP Storage Controllers and Host Bus Adapters

Prerequisites:

IMPORTANT: Firmware updates must be performed during a system maintenance window, with all I/O to the system halted.

WARNING! Do not power cycle or restart during the firmware update as this can result in loss of capabilities for this unit. It typically takes several minutes for the firmware to load.

NOTE:All firmware flash progress messages are logged to /var/cpq/Verbose.log and flash summary is logged to /var/cpq/Component.log.


To ensure the integrity of your download, HPE recommends verifying your results with the following SHA-256 Checksum values:

Reboot Requirement:
Reboot is required after installation for updates to take effect and hardware stability to be maintained.


Installation:

To update firmware from VMware ESXi operating system on target server:

  • Enable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.
  • Login as root (You must be root in order to apply the ROM update).
  • Place the Smart Component in a temporary directory.
  • Unzip the Smart Component with unzip CP0xxxxx.zip command.
  • From the same directory, execute the Smart Component. For example: ./CP0xxxxx.vmexe.
  • Follow the directions given by the Smart Component.
  • Disable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.
  • Reboot your system if you would like the update to take effect immediately.

NOTES:

OPTIONS for in band enclosure flash
   -d                  Dumps discovery information in XML format to <file>
   -e                  Flash even if the device is already up to date
   -f                   Always flash applicable devices (same as -e -g)
   -g                  Flash if the device has a later firmware
   -s                  Do not display any text

To use HP Smart Update Manager from the HP Service Pack for ProLiant:

Offline:

  • Place the HP Service Pack for ProLiant on a USB key using the HP USB Key Creator Utility.
  • Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, /hp/swpackages on the USB key.
  • Boot from the newly created HP Service Pack for Proliant USB key.
  • Follow HP Smart Update Manager steps to complete firmware update.

Remote Online:

  • Place the SPP on a USB key using the HP USB Key Creator Utility.
  • Place the desired firmware to be updated in the directory, /SPP20xxxxx/hp/swpackages on the USB key.
  • Mount the USB key on a remote server running Windows or Linux.
  • CD /hp/swpackages and ./hpsum.
  • Select the next button.
  • Click Add Single Target.
  • Type the IP or DNS address of the ESXi host to be updated.
  • Enter the ESXi host credentials (root or administrator username and password).
  • Follow HP Smart Update Manager Steps and complete the firmware update.

IMPORTANT: Power up/down sequence is important to maintain integrity of the configuration, please refer to "HP D6000 Disk Enclosure User Guide" document for more details.

  • In rare cases, the Smart Array controller would become inaccessible after multiple IO module resets were performed.  If a controller lockup occurred because of this issue, the error code 0xAB would display in the following locations after a subsequent server reboot:

    • ADU reports / HPSSA diagnostic reports

  • Resolves SAS link errors that may occur with cascaded HP D6000 disk enclosures (limited support for cascading).

Problems Fixed:

  • Under rare circumstances, repeated rebooting of servers might cause loss of paths to the drives.
  • On rare occasions during server power on or hot-add/-removal of drives, the front panel Global Service Indicator (GSI) LED illuminated amber and the back panel seven-segment error display showed a value of 14. The error condition was caused by the error count not getting reset after a hot-plug event.
  • Online LED was not illuminated for configured drives.

Description

This package updates the I/O module firmware on HP D6000 Disk Enclosures attached to supported HP Storage Controllers and Host Bus Adapters

Installation Instructions
