Product models

This release applies to the following product models:

  • HPE StoreEver 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader

  • HPE StoreEver MSL2024 Tape Library

  • HPE StoreEver MSL4048 Tape Library

  • HPE StoreEver MSL8048 Tape Library

  • HPE StoreEver MSL8096 Tape Library

Operating systems

This release is not OS-dependent.

Languages

  • English

  • Japanese for the library RMI

Compatibility notes

This version firmware is compatible with:

  • HPE Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) standalone version 4.22 and newer

  • L&TT web-based GUI version 5.1 and newer (does not support LTO-7)

  • Command View for Tape Libraries (Command View TL) version 5.1 and newer

  • TapeAssure Advanced (license installed from and used with Command View TL 5.1 and newer)

When changing firmware

Because each firmware revision contains new features, some configuration settings are not retained when earlier firmware versions are loaded. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends against downgrading firmware unless instructed to do so by a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support engineer. Always verify configuration settings after installing firmware.

MSL Encryption Kit token with odd-numbered PIN length

When using firmware version 2.50, 4.40, 6.70, 9.10, or newer revisions with the Encryption Kit, any key server tokens set with an odd number of characters for the PIN will not be totally backwards compatible in autoloaders or libraries with code revisions 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70. In those cases, a token in an autoloader or library with 2.10, 4.00, 6.30, or 8.70 firmware revisions will be able to accept the PIN for the token and access keys on the token, but the user will not be able to change the PIN on the token, save the keys to a file, or restore the keys from a file until the autoloader or library firmware is upgraded. Users should always upgrade to the latest version of firmware to ensure complete compatibility.

Enhancements

The following enhancements are part of this firmware version:

  • Added an NTP Daylight Saving Time option to adjust the time automatically.

  • Made minor KMIP query changes.

  • Added TLS 1.2 support.

Fixes

The following issues are fixed in this firmware version:

  • Improved reading of barcode labels for the SE625 barcode scanner.

Known issues and workarounds

  • Issue: When SNMP is enabled, this firmware version generates an SNMP trap and a library informational event once every 24 hours at midnight, based on the library date/time. This event is the result of a periodic maintenance check of the network interface chip (NIC) by the library controller. A similar event is generated if the network cable is removed and reinserted.

Workaround: This trap and event can be ignored and have no effect on library operations.

  • Issue: When enabling KMIP, in a rare condition the system might display error “HE: system error, memory at address zero violated. Code: D7 E1”.

Workaround: Reboot the library. KMIP will be enabled after the reboot.

  • Issue: The RMI does not allow connections although the autoloader or library can still respond to standard ping commands, the OCP is functional, and the communication with the tape drives operates normally. The only backup operations that might be affected are those configured for KMIP configuration.

This is a rare condition, but if the autoloader or library gets into this state while it is configured for KMIP encryption, backup operations can fail because KMIP keys cannot be retrieved.

The check condition related to this KMIP failure is:

    Check Condition 0x02/0x7463(ASCQ=0x7463)

Workaround: Re-seat the Ethernet cable attached to the library controller. No autoloader or library reboot is needed.

HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader, and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries Ultrium 920 tape drive firmware release notes

SAS version C25W

..Description

This release includes updated tape drive firmware for Ultrium 920 half-height SAS HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders, and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries.

The tape drive firmware can be updated through any of the following methods:

  • Remote management interface (RMI).

  • Operator control panel (OCP).

  • HP Library and Tape Tools (L&TT).

Tape drive firmware versions

  • C25W — SAS

Update recommendation  Recommended

Supersedes  All earlier versions of tape drive firmware.

..Product models

All HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries with one or more Ultrium 920 tape drives.

..Languages

  • English (American)

  • English (International)

..Fixes

New functionality

  • In previous code versions, media load details, such as load count, thread count, serial number, and barcode (if any) were reported in the Event Log upon loading a data tape. This code version extends the functionality to report this information when loading any WORM media as well. This will only be seen by users who extract the Event Log after the load of a WORM cartridge.

  • In this code release, the Drive Error LED is turned on when a fault 0x7708 (Actuator Stroke Size Too Small) occurs.

Write/read spacing issues

  • This code version introduces performance improvements for reading varied length blocks. It targets corner case scenarios where read transfer flushing coincided with variable length block handling, and yields improved read performance.

  • This code version fixes possible positioning errors in spacing/positioning operations for corner case scripts using very large record sizes, where 1Mb/2Mb records were written and 2Mb/4Mb reads were requested

  • This code version fixes possible issues where the removal of the medium was prevented, pressing the eject button or an issuing an unload command would not eject the tape, which could cause applications to be confused regarding which record to space to when restoring data and could cause a restore operation to fail.

  • This FW version introduces improvements in the spacing, backspace and search performance. This is achieved by improved buffer management and flushing methods.

Drive hangs

N/A

Cartridge, cartridge memory, and MAM:

  • This issue has been fixed so writing attributes and reading them back are both successful operations. In previous code versions, when a tape that was partially initialized by a non-HP drive is loaded into an HP drive, and the application writes MAM attributes, the commands return a status of GOOD. However, trying to read them back resulted in an error (Check Condition).

  • This code version introduces improvements in media handling.

  • This code release introduces a fix so that the CM thread count should only be incremented after a thread operation and not after a partial load. In previous code versions, when a cartridge was partially loaded, the CM thread count was incremented.

Interface-related issues:

  • Corrected retry issue that resulted in a backup failure or a device dropping off the bus and is now resolved.

  • Transport Layer Retry (TLR) handling has been fixed to ensure an issue seen on DAT SAS products does not occur.

  • SAS drives connected to certain HP HBAs were subjected to a large Transport Layer Retry (TLR) occurrence, which adversely affected performance. The performance has been drastically improved by reducing the frame credit to one.

Automation issues

N/A

Universal Cleaning Cartridge:

  • In previous code versions, in the unlikely scenario that a Universal Cleaning Cartridge (UCC) had a stuck leader pin, the drive would fail to eject it and would have to be power cycled. This issue is now resolved.

  • In previous code versions, if a UCC was not initialized correctly, it could be left with a thread count of one. That meant it would never be re-initialized and it would always attempt to clean in the same area of tape and never increment the thread count. This issue is now resolved.

  • In previous code versions, a partial load of an un-initialized tape resulted in partial creation of the cartridge CM tables. This was because the initialization data page wasn’t created until the tape was actually threaded. There was also a logging informational error, since a partial load of a cleaning cartridge resulted in an event showing ’cleaning cartridge, inserted, clean taken place and ejected’. This issue in a library environment which used Non-HP drives & cleaning cartridges which were partially loaded before they were initialized. This issue is now resolved.

All HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries with one or more Ultrium 920 tape drives.

..Languages
