VULNERABILITY SUMMARY

L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF) describes a security vulnerability in certain HPE products that use Intel-based processors that may affect both virtualized and non-virtualized environments.

HPE has been working with Intel and other industry partners to identify mitigations that enhance platform resistance to this vulnerability and its coordinated public disclosure.

HPE is addressing the L1TF vulnerability in our Intel-based products by releasing system ROM microcode updates (MCU).

Coupled with new operating system and hypervisor software updates released by industry partners, these new microcode updates help ensure that our customers have access to the protections necessary for traditional IT and cloud service environments.

While the mitigations are sufficient for most computing environments, some, such as those where mutually untrusted guest Virtual Machines (VM) run concurrently on sibling threads of a given processor core, may require additional mitigation.

In this case, customers may need to enable hypervisor core scheduling techniques, or choose not to use hyper-threading at all. HPE recommends customers seek guidance from their hypervisor vendor if they have additional concerns or questions.

More information, including detailed mitigation guidance from Intel is available online, and customers are encouraged to review the following Intel advisory:

RESOLUTION

HPE has provided updates to certain products using Intel-based processors. Please visit the HPE Support Center page to download the firmware updates that resolve these vulnerabilities.

Click the following link:

https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home

Enter a product name (e.g., "DL380 Gen9") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product.

From the Drivers & software drop down menus on the left side of the page:

  1. Under Software Type, select "BIOS-(Entitlement Required")

  2. For further filtering if needed - Select the specific Operating System from the Operating Environment.

  3. Select the appropriate version of the System ROM.

  4. Click Download.

Resolution of these vulnerabilities may require operating system updates provided by the operating system vendor, hypervisor software updates, and system ROM microcode updates.

Refer to the Impacted Product Version section of this bulletin for a list of System ROM revisions that includes updated microcode for all ProLiant architectures.

Note: L1 Terminal Fault – SGX only affects systems that support Intel’s SGX functionality. Only the ProLiant m710x Server Cartridge supports SGX. All other systems listed are not vulnerable to L1 Terminal Fault – SGX.

A System ROM report is also available on the HPE Product Security Vulnerability Alerts web page for the L1 Terminal Fault Speculative Side-channel vulnerabilities. You can find that list here:
