VULNERABILITY SUMMARY

Certain HPE Altoline Switches are affected by the Side-Channel Vulnerabilities known as “Meltdown” and “Spectre” which were publicly disclosed on 3 January 2018. The vulnerabilities can be fixed by updating the switch BIOS. The BIOS update tool can be obtained by contacting HPE Support. It is not posted on the HPE My Networking website due to the complexity of the upgrade process.

RESOLUTION

An updated BIOS - BIOS V36 Build 20180212 will resolve above vulnerabilities.

Contact HPE Support to obtain the Altoline BIOS Update Tool. The update guide in the tool explains the process in detail.

Note: The BIOS update itself is a simple process. However, during the upgrade, the DMI information is cleared from the ROM, so there are extra steps to be performed:

  1. ONIE Rescue Mode: Run DMI tool to show DMI information, and record the necessary values
  2. UEFI Shell: Upgrade the BIOS
  3. UEFI Shell: Write the DMI information back into the ROM using values taken in step 1

The BIOS update needs to be done via the console port, and a USB flash drive is required to store the files from the update tool.
