DESCRIPTION

HP Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller configured in HP servers requires a proprietary HP device driver. HP recommends using the HP B140i driver because it provides RAID set compatibility with other Smart Array controllers, enables the use of familiar HP configuration, monitoring, and management software, and enables upgrading directly to a traditional Smart Array Controller if desired.

This Dynamic Smart Array controller uses the hpdsa driver, a proprietary driver available only from HP. This specialized driver provides a low-cost highly reliable RAID solution by moving the advanced RAID algorithms that would normally run in a RAID controller's firmware up into the operating system driver.

If RAID is not needed, Dynamic Smart Array Controller functionality may be disabled through RBSU and HP Smart Storage Administrator and configured in SATA mode, and server will use AHCI mode instead.

DETAILS

Configure the Controller for SATA Mode and Use the Distribution AHCI Driver.

If RAID functionality is not desired, disable the Dynamic Smart Array Controller and configure the system for SATA mode by performing the following procedure:

  1. Restart the server.
  2. Press F9 to enter System Utilities when prompted during Power-On-Self-Test (POST).
  3. Select System Configuration from the System Utilities screen.
  4. Select BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU)
  5. Select System Options.
  6. Select Embedded SATA Configuration.
  7. Select Enable SATA AHCI Support.
  8. Press F10 to save your selection.
  9. Exit the RBSU, System Configuration, and System Utilities menu.

Locating the HP Dynamic Smart Array Controller Driver:

Before installing the operating system on an HP server equipped with an HP Dynamic Smart Array Controller, download the driver from hp.com, which can be located using the following navigation:

  1. Click on the following link:

    https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home

  2. Enter a product name (e.g., "DL380 Gen9") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product. .
  3. From the Drivers & software dropdown menus on the left side of the page:
    • Select the Software Type - (e.g. Firmware)
    • Select the Software Sub Type - (e.g. Network)
    • For further filtering if needed - Select the specific Operating System from the Operating Environment.

  4. Select the latest release of Dynamic Smart Array B140i. Note: To ensure the latest version will be downloaded, click on the Revision History tab to check if a new version of the firmware/driver is available.
  5. Click Download.

IMPORTANT: Changing controller modes from AHCI to Dynamic Smart Array mode, or from Dynamic Smart Array mode to AHCI mode, will disable access to any data that was written to the disks while the controller was configured in the previous mode. Back up any data that must be preserved before switching controller modes.
