Original Document Release.

Memory pre-failure alert notifications associated with HP Advanced Memory Error Detection may not be reported on ProLiant Gen9 servers and ProLiant DL580 Gen8 server. The HP Advanced Memory Error Detection on these servers are incompatible with the memory error patrolling done by VMware ESXi 5.5. However, the HP Custom VMware ESXi Images supported with the servers automatically modifies the settings to ensure that memory pre-failure conditions are discovered and reported correctly. All ProLiant Gen9 and DL580 Gen 8 server versions are affected.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant Gen9 or ProLiant DL580 Gen8 servers configured with VMware ESXi 5.5.

RESOLUTION

A workaround is implemented for all HP Custom ESXi images supported with the impacted servers. The ProLiant DL580 Gen 8 server is supported with HP Custom ESXi 5.5 images dated Feb 2014 (image revision 5.72) or later. The HP Custom ESXi images supported on ProLiant Gen9 servers vary by model and the HP Firmware and Software Recipes available on http://vibsdepot.hp.com/ should be referenced to determine the supported revisions. The HP Custom image revision can be determined by using one of the following methods:

Review the Custom Image file name used for installation. The image name contains the version number and release date in the following format: VMware-ESXi-5.5.0--HP-<image version number>-<release date>-.iso (or .zip). In the following custom image, 5.72 is the image revision and February 2014 is the release date: VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-HP-5.72.23-Feb2014.iso

View the contents of build.xml file on ESXi host by executing the following command from the ESXi shell/SSH: cat /opt/hp/build/build.xml

If the appropriate HP Custom ESXi 5.5 Image is not used, the following command should be executed from the ESXi shell following successful installation of ESXi 5.5:

esxcli system settings advanced set -o /Misc/MCEMonitorInterval -i 86700000

If the host is deployed using Auto Deploy Stateless or Auto Deploy Stateless Caching, then the setting should be modified before capturing the host profile.

Note: This issue is corrected in VMware ESXi 6.0.
