DESCRIPTION

When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 SP4, or SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 SP1 (or later) on an HP ProLiant server with Input/Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) enabled and the HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i or HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i enabled, the HP server may panic on reboot.

The HP driver (hpvsa) for the HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i and HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i controllers does not support IOMMU enablement.

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant server when installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 SP4, or SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 SP1 (or later) with IOMMU enabled and the HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i or HP Dynamic Smart Array B320i enabled.

RESOLUTION

To avoid the panic or server reboot, perform either of the following:

Disable the IOMMU in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) if NOT required in the BIOS during the Power-On Self-Test (POST) by performing the following:

  1. During system boot, press F9 to enter the RBSU.
  2. Select System Configuration.
  3. Select Processor Settings.
  4. Select AMD-Vi(IOMMU).
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Save and exit RBSU.

OR

Disable the IOMMU in Linux if required in the BIOS during the POST (For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 only) by performing the following:

  1. Type the following commands:
    cd boot\grub
    vi menu.lst
  2. At the end of the file, enter the new parameter as follows:
    iommu=soft.
  3. Save the file.
  4. Restart the server.
