PXE is disabled by default on most HP-branded NC-series network adapters. In general, certain NIC settings can be accessed during Power-On Self-Test (POST) and changes to enable or disable WOL, PXE, etc. can be made.

However, Intel-based adapters do not present their Option ROM information to the ProLiant servers during boot. As a result, certain features of Intel-based adapters, such as Wake-on-LAN or PXE, cannot be modified. Therefore, an Intel utility called BootUtil must be used to manage these types of changes.

DETAILS

Obtain the Intel Ethernet Flash Firmware Utility (BootUtil) package, PREBOOT.EXE, from Intel at the following link:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=19186 Non-HPE site

Run BootUtil to make desired modifications to the networking environment. Instructions are supplied with the utility.

For ProLiant DL580 Gen8 and Gen9 (UEFI based systems-while configured for Legacy Boot Mode), the following procedure will enable PXE without having to create a boot environment for the Intel BootUtil utility:

  1. Download preboot.exe from the Intel site

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=19186 Non-HPE site

  2. Extract contents and copy the bootutil64e.efi file to a USB key
  3. Login via iLO remote console to the server
  4. Boot the server to F9 - RBSU
  5. Attach USB key via iLO Remote Console Virtual Media
  6. From the main F9 menu, chose Embedded Applications:

  7. From Embedded Applications Menu, select Embedded UEFI shell:

  8. At UEFI shell prompt, enter FS0: to change to the USB key.
  9. A DOS dir command can be executed in the directory to show contents of the USB key.
  10. Enter the following command to enable PXE on the 560SFP+: BOOTUTIL64E.EFI –ALL –BOOTENABLE=PXE :
Note: If multiple Intel adapters are installed or only specific ports are desired to be set for PXE Enable, use the parameter "-NIC=x" where "x" is the port that should be enabled in place of "-ALL."

  11. Once completed, the Version column in the output will reflect the PXE ROM version to be used and the Flash Firmware column will show PXE Enabled.
  12. Exit the UEFI Shell by typing exit and pressing enter.
  13. Exit RBSU and power off the server.
  14. Power the server back on and enter F9 again
  15. Confirm that the option NIC is now listed in the boot controller order listing. If it is not, you may need to temporarily enable Network boot option for one of the embedded LOM ports and power off the server and back on. However once done, the LOM port network boot option can then be disabled again and the option NIC will remain in the boot controller order.
