Original document release

In rare instances, on a ProLiant Gen8-series server configured with any HP Smart Array Controller, a communication issue may occur between HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) and the Smart Array Controller. As a result, the Health LED on the server may blink red and a "Critical Controller Error: Failed" message may be displayed in HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) web interface. Even though iLO is losing communication with the Smart Array Controller, this does not impact host operating system access to storage.

When this occurs, no other tools report this error. The error is only displayed in the Storage/Drive Arrays tab in HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) web interface and in all places iLO displays storage data (web, RIBCL, and SNMP):

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant Gen8-series server configured with any HP Smart Array Controller listed in Platforms Affected below.

RESOLUTION

If the server and the Smart Array Controller are functioning as expected, the error can be cleared by resetting iLO 4. After the reset, check the iLO 4 web interface page again. If the controller does not display as "failed," then the problem was due to a temporary communication loss and can be safely ignored.

This issue has been corrected in HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) Firmware Version 1.10 (or later) and Smart Array Firmware Version 5.42 (or later). iLO 4 will restore the system to "healthy" when communication resumes. Both iLO 4 and the Smart Array firmware must be updated to avoid this issue.
