Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 - Error "Code 80072EE2 Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

Issue

Two identical servers DL380 G7 with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 installed.

One of them was able to run Windows update to download and install updates but the other one always got the error 80072EE2 and never had been able to check for updates.

Windows could not search for new updates
An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer
Error(s) found:
Code 80072EE2 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Checks in both servers following KB836941:

  • Configured the proxy server correctly in Internet Explorer.

  • Had a correct name resolution.

  • Added the windows update trusted sites.

  • Had Windows Firewall disabled and no third party firewall installed, etc.

Also checked for viruses or worms without luck as Windows Update is one of the affected services by the Conficker.

Windows Update log didn't logged valuable information, only error 80072EE2, so user enabled maximum logging for Windows update - %windir%\Windowsupdate.log - following KB902093.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Trace
Value name: Flags
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 00000007

Value name: Level
Value type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 00000004

After forcing Windows Update, checked and reviewed the log, user noticed the recurrent errors invoking proxy server, seemed like the WU service was not able to retrieve the proxy data and Autoproxy tried direct connection using NULL proxy:

Solution

After trying lot of things, due to NULL proxy messages, user set the WINHTTP proxy server for Windows Update which is empty by default:

  1. Check the current configuration (empty by default).

    Run:

    netsh winhttp show proxy

    Output:

    Current WinHTTP proxy settings:
    Direct access (no proxy server).

  2. Set a valid proxy server to reach internet:

    Run:

netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http=myproxy:port;https=mysproxy:port" bypass-list="*.intranet;192.168.*"

    Output:

    Current WinHTTP proxy settings:
    Proxy Server(s) : http=myproxy:port;https=mysproxy:port
    Bypass List : *.intranet;192.168.*

  3. Restart the Windows update and force a new check for updates.

NOTE: If the above procedure does not solve the issue you can also reset the windows update components following KB971058. Click here to access Non-HPE site .
