HP 1900-8G Switch - Lost Administration Password

Lost switch password.

Cannot access the switch administration.

This switch was previously marketed as 3CDSG8 OfficeConnect Managed Gigabit Switch.

Without any administration user access to the switch, one can only restore the switch to its factory default state.

Factory default:

To reset the switch back to the default values (username = admin, no password), connect to the console port with a terminal emulator, like Hyperterminal. Open the terminal emulation software and configure the serial port settings to match the default settings for the switch, which are:

  • 38,400 baud (bits per second).

  • 8 data bits.

  • No parity.

  • 1 stop bit.

  • No hardware flow control.

Refer to the documentation that accompanies the terminal emulation software for more information.

Power up the switch. When the switch is booting up, immediately after the first message (Booting ...image 0) is displayed, press together the Control, Shift and - keys. If the user is successful, the user will see the output below on the console interface. If the user does not get the Entering safe mode displayed, the user should power cycle the switch and try again.

Booting ...image 0

Entering safe mode

SRAM testing: Passed

S/W Version: v1.0.5

H/W Version: R01

serial number0001

Default IP address:

**Bootup finish**

Entered safe mode.

The software and hardware versions, serial number and default IP address on the switch are likely to be different to those shown in the above example.

The user now has access to a limited set of commands that do not require to login in to gain access to them.

Enter the command: system restore default

This will delete all the configuration files and return the switch to its factory default state.

The console will display:

>system restore default

*** Restoring to default configuration...

*** Restored to default configuration...

*** Activating new configuration...

Enter the command: exit

This will exit the safe mode and the user can now log back into the switch with the username admin and no password.

NOTE: By following this procedure, you will also erase all the configuration settings you may have. The username and password are stored in the configuration file (you cannot see them as the file is not readable). If you restore your configuration file after having followed the procedure below, you will reset the username/password back to the default values.
