IMPORTANT: This firmware upgrade is considered a critical fix and is required to prevent the issue detailed below. HP strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to perform the required action could result in the system falsely marking additional drives in the array as failed in an instance when only a single drive has failed. By disregarding this notification, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related errors.

On rare occasions, a ProLiant DL180 G5 or DL185 G5 server configured with a 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane may incorrectly mark additional drives in the array as failed, when encountering a single drive failure. The additional drives in the array being falsely marked as failed will function normally on a server reboot.

Any ProLiant DL180 G5 server configured as follows:

  • 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane running a firmware version prior to version 2.02
  • SATA hard drives
  • Smart Array P400 Controller or Smart Array P800 Controller

Any ProLiant DL185 G5 server configured as follows:

  • 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane running a firmware version prior to version 2.02
  • SATA hard drives
  • Smart Array P400 Controller or Smart Array P800 Controller

SCOPE

Any ProLiant DL180 G5 server configured as follows:

  • 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane running a firmware version prior to version 2.02
  • SATA hard drives
  • Smart Array P400 Controller or Smart Array P800 Controller

Any ProLiant DL185 G5 server configured as follows:

  • 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane running a firmware version prior to version 2.02

  • Smart Array P400 Controller or Smart Array P800 Controller

RESOLUTION

The Smart Component CP011998.scexe includes the 12 Bay Expander Backplane Firmware Version 2.02 and is now available for download. The 12 Bay Expander Backplane Firmware Version 2.02 will ensure that failure of a single drive does not initiate additional false drive failures within the array.

Perform the steps given below (in order) to upgrade the 12 Bay Expander Backplane Firmware to version 2.02.

Note: The P400/P800 Smart Array Firmware version needs to be at 6.86 (or higher) and the P410/P212 Firmware version needs to be at 2.50 (or higher).

Step 1

To ensure that the current firmware version for the 12 Bay Expander Backplane is prior to version 2.02, perform the following in the Array Diagnostic Utility (ADU):

  1. Run the ADU report.
  2. Save the report as a Zip file.
  3. Open the ADUreport.txt.
  4. Perform a search by using the search string:HP14HDD.

Locate the Product Revision, also known as the Firmware Version, under Product ID HP14HDD as follows:

Smart Array P400 in slot 5 : Storage Enclosure 1 : Sense Bus Parameters
Peripheral Type 0x0d
RMB 0x00
Versions 0x05
Misc 0x02
Additional Length 0x5b
Support Bits 0x00
Vendor ID HP
Product ID HP14HDD
Product Revision 2.00

Step 2

If the current firmware version of the 12 Bay Expander Backplane is prior to version 2.02, create a bootable USB key using the USB Key Utility for the Easy Set-Up CD as follows:

    https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/cd/p2109415680/v55030/516359-023.zip

  2. Ensure the Easy Setup CD is inserted into an alternate computing device (server or PC running a Windows operating system).

  3. Download the HP USB Key Utility from:

    https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p1576607567/v51924/cp010431.exe

  4. Follow the installation instructions for the HP USB Key Utility to create a bootable USB key from the Easy Set-UP CD.

Step 3

Perform the following to download the Smart Component CP011998.scexe (that includes the 12 Bay Expander Backplane Firmware Version 2.02) onto the USB key:

  1. Select the following ftp URL:

    https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw-array/p1883464895/v57700/CP011998.scexe

  2. Copy the CP011998.scexe to the files directory located on the USB key.

Step 4

  1. Insert the USB key into the ProLiant DL180 G5 or ProLiant DL185 G5 server.
  2. Boot the server using the Easy Setup CD Graphical User Interface (GUI) via the USB key.
  3. Type and hold CTRL+ALT while typing"d" ,"b", "x", in order to execute from the bash prompt.
  4. Type the following commands to execute ./CP011998.scexe from the bash prompt:

    # cd /mnt/boot/files

    # ./CP011998.scexe

  5. Follow the instructions on the screen in order to upgrade the 12 Bay Drive Expander Backplane Firmware to version 2.02.
