Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - Unable to Take a Snapshot of the C Drive Using VSS

ISSUE:

Windows Server 2003 is unable to take a snapshot of the C drive using VSS. Event ID 34 is logged in the system log stating the following:

The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of a failure to ensure crash dump or hibernate consistency

SOLUTION:

Have a single pagefile on the C drive instead of multiple pagefiles on the C drive.

Details

When trying to create a snapshot as follows using VSS, it produces an error:

C:\>vssadmin Create Shadow /For=C:

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp.
Error: The shadow copy provider had an error. Please see the system and
application event logs for more information.

The system event log reported:

Event Type: Error

Event Category: None

Date: 10/08/2009
Time: 11:26:36
User: N/A
Computer: ********
Description:
The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of a failure to ensure crash dump or hibernate consistency.

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........

Decoding the error code reveals VSS failed because the object was missing.

Further, looking into the logs revealed that the customer had multiple pagefiles within different directories on the C drive. Though it is possible to have multiple pagefiles, the pagefiles should be on different disks but not on the same disk/ drive.

The customer had the following page file settings:

Paging Files ...............................
C:\PageFiles\PageFile1\pagefile.sys 4095 4095
C:\PageFiles\PageFile2\pagefile.sys 4095 4095
C:\PageFiles\PageFile3\pagefile.sys 4095 4095
C:\PageFiles\PageFile4\pagefile.sys 4095 4095

The other possibilities for event ID 34 are as follows:

  • Corrupt pagefile >>>> Solution is to recreate the pagefile
  • If hibernation is enabled then hiberfil.sys might be missing or corrupt >>> Solution is to disable hibernation.

In this case, deleting the other pagefiles on the C drive and having one pagefile, resolved the issue.
