Original Document Release.

On any HPE ProLiant Gen10 server or HPE Synergy Gen10 Compute Module running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7, and configured with any of the HPE Smart Array Controllers listed in the Scope section below, with smartpqi Driver version 1.0.2.1038-1 and Firmware version 1.65(B) (also denoted as 1.65-0 in the VMware Compatibility Guide) running in a VMware vSAN environment; the disks may go offline. When this occurs, the virtual machines may experience out of memory (memory allocation) and APD conditions, messages similar to the following will be logged in the hosts kernel logs:

OR

The server may experience slower performance, and under rare conditions the following error messages may be logged in the support logs:

vSAN detected an unrecoverable medium or checksum error for component uuid on disk group uuid.

vSAN detected and fixed a medium or checksum error for component uuid on disk group uuid.

AND

Under very rare circumstances, a Purple Screen of Death (PSOD) similar to the following may be displayed:

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant Gen10 server or HPE Synergy Gen10 Compute Module running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7, and configured with any of the following HPE Smart Array Controllers with smartpqi Driver version affected: 1.0.2.1038-1 and Firmware version affected: 1.65(B) (also denoted as 1.65-0 in the VMware Compatibility Guide):

  • HPE Smart Array E208e-p Controller
  • HPE Smart Array E208i-a Controller
  • HPE Smart Array E208i-c Controller
  • HPE Smart Array E208i-p Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P408e-m Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P408e-p Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P408i-a Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P408i-c Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P408i-p Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P416ie-m Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P816i-a Controller

RESOLUTION

To resolve these issues on HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers or HPE Synergy Gen10 Compute Modules, download and install the vSAN certified smartpqi Driver version 1.0.3.2309-1 and Gen10 Smart Array Controller Firmware version 1.99, available at the following URLs:

  • The vSAN certified smartpqi Driver version 1.0.3.2309-1 and Gen10 Smart Array Controller Firmware version 1.99 can be applied on HPE Synergy Gen10 Compute Modules running the Synergy SPP version 2018.11.20181205 or 2019.03.20190514.
  • HPE Synergy Composer 4.20.01.01 is supported with Synergy SPP version 2019.03.20190612 or 2018.11.20190611.
  • HPE Synergy Composer 4.10.05 is supported with Synergy SPP version 2018.11.20190611 only.
