On any HPE ProLiant Gen9 server running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7, and configured with any of the HPE Smart Array Controllers/Smart Host Bus Adapters listed in the Scope section below, with nhpsa Driver version 2.0.30-1 and Firmware version 6.60 (also denoted as 6.60-0 in the VMware Compatibility Guide) running in a VMware vSAN environment; the disks may go offline. When this occurs, the virtual machine will intermittently stop functioning, and messages similar to the following will be logged in the hosts kernel logs:

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant Gen9 server running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7, and configured with any of the following HPE Smart Array Controllers/Smart Host Bus Adapters with nhpsa Driver version 2.0.30-1 and Firmware version 6.60 (also denoted as 6.60-0 in the VMware Compatibility Guide):

  • HPE H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE H240nr Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE H244br Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HPE Smart Array P240nr Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P244br Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P246br Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P440 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P440ar Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P441 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P542D Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P741m Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P840 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P840ar Controller

RESOLUTION

To resolve these issues on HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers, download and install the vSAN certified nhpsa Driver version 2.0.42-1 and Gen9 Smart Array Controller Firmware version 6.88, available at the following URLs:

Important note: The nhpsa Driver version 2.0.42-1 and Firmware version 6.88 correct the issues described in the Description section above; however, these have a Hot-Plug functionality issue that ONLY affects SATA drives used in VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7.
