When running HP Insight Diagnostics on an HPE ProLiant Gen8-series or HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server with the following hard drives installed, the server may erroneously fail at Quick Test: Short Background Self Test.

  • HP 600GB 6G SAS 10K rpm SFF (2.5-inch) SC Enterprise 3yr Warranty Hard Drive-652583-B21
  • HP 300GB 6G SAS 10K 2.5in SC ENT HDD-652564-B21
  • HP 300GB 6G SAS 15K rpm SFF (2.5-inch) SC Enterprise 3yr Warranty Hard Drive-652611-B21
  • HP 900GB 6G SAS 10K rpm SFF (2.5-inch) SC Enterprise 3yr Warranty Hard Drive 652589-B21

When this occurs, all the hard drives will be displayed as failed in the Short Background Self Test with the test progress bar indicating 100%, but highlighted in red, and the duration of the test time will be over eight minutes. Test failure may occur intermittently during a number of test loops and the test may complete as expected after retrying:

This occurs after the HP Insight Diagnostics does not receive a status response from the hard drives, resulting in a prolonged testing time of over eight minutes. Unidentified persistent background activities interfere with the Insight Diagnostics test, causing it to stop responding at 0% during the four minute testing limit and test finally stops after over eight minutes, indicates 100% complete, and reports a failure in the log.

SCOPE

Scope:

Any HPE ProLiant Gen8-series or HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server running the Quick Test: Short Background Self Test with any of the following hard drives installed:

  • HP 600GB 6G SAS 10K rpm SFF (2.5-inch) SC Enterprise 3yr Warranty Hard Drive-652583-B21
  • HP 300GB 6G SAS 10K 2.5in SC ENT HDD-652564-B21
  • HP 300GB 6G SAS 15K rpm SFF (2.5-inch) SC Enterprise 3yr Warranty Hard Drive-652611-B21

The following versions of HP Insight Diagnostics are affected:

  • HP Insight Diagnostics 4/28/2015 Version 10.34.1914A (x86_64)
  • HP Insight Diagnostics 7/16/2014 Version 10.14.1575A (x86_64)
  • HP Insight Diagnostics packaged in HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2015.10.0

This has only been observed on the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen8 server; however, this may occur on any HPE ProLiant Gen8-series or HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server.

RESOLUTION

As workaround, retry the HP Insight Diagnostics Quick Test: Short background Self Test until the test passes.
