On any HPE ProLiant server running VMware ESXi 6.7/6.7 U1 and using the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.06.0 or Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.09.0 for online updates, the SPP does not support online updates.

Smart Update Manager (SUM) version 8.3.0 will display an error message for attempts to perform online update on VMware vSphere 6.7/6.7 U1.

This occurs due to an issue in the VMware Common Information Model (CIM) interface on VMware ESXi 6.7/6.7 U1.

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant server running VMware ESXi 6.7/6.7 U1 and using the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.06.0 or Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.09.0 for online updates.

Note:

RESOLUTION

For HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers

To fix this issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Download the Integrated Smart Update Tools (iSUT) bundle version 2.3.6 (or later), available at the following URL:
  2. Copy the iSUT offline bundle to the VMware ESXi system.
  3. Install the iSUT offline bundle on the VMware ESXi host using the following command:
    • esxcli software vib install -d <iSUT offline bundle>
  4. Reboot the VMware ESXi host
  5. Download the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2018.11.0 (or later), available at the following URL:

    http://www.hpe.com/info/spp

  6. Having all the previous steps completed, online updates with the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2018.11.0 (or later) will function as expected, and the additional steps are not required.

For HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers

To fix this issue; perform the following steps:

  1. Download and upgrade to HPE Custom Image for ESXi 6.7 U1 April 2019, available at the following URL:

    www.hpe.com/info/esxidownload

  2. Download and install the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2019.03.0 (or later), available at the following URL:

    http://www.hpe.com/info/spp

  3. Having all the previous steps completed, online updates with the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2019.03.0 (or later) will function as expected, and the additional steps are not required.

Important Note: Online updates for VMware ESXi 6.7 are not supported on HPE ProLiant Gen9 (or earlier server generations).

As a workaround:

  • To update the firmware, use the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) offline firmware update.
  • To update software and drivers, perform either of the following methods:
