DESCRIPTION

HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) Firmware Version 2.55 added a new feature that makes it possible to perform an auxiliary power-cycle on a server remotely.

The power-cycle will occur during the next server reset. This power-cycle is similar to removing the power cable from DL/ML-series servers, or unseating a server blade from an enclosure.

DETAILS

The "AuxCycle" parameter sets a flag in the CPLD to tell the server to perform an auxiliary power-cycle; however, the timing of the auxiliary power-cycle is dependent on the current power state of the server.

If the server is currently powered off (standby power on / ILO accessible), the auxiliary power-cycle will take place immediately.

If the server is currently powered on (for example, the server is going through POST, OS booted, etc.), the auxiliary power-cycle will take place the next time that the server is rebooted or powered off (for example, an OS graceful reboot or shutdown is performed, or the virtual power button is pressed).

What to expect after the auxiliary power-cycle has completed:

*** Whether the server will power on is determined by the "System Power Restore Settings" setting (the default is "Always Power On")

Use the following steps to perform the auxiliary power-cycle available in the 2.55 (and later) iLO 4 firmware.

NOTE: in this example, the server OS is booted, so the auxiliary power-cycle completes after the OS reboot or shutdown is performed.

1. Create a text file (auxcycle.json) with this content:
{
"path": "/redfish/v1/Systems/1/Actions/Oem/Hp/ComputerSystemExt.SystemReset/",
"body": { "Action": "SystemReset", "ResetType": "AuxCycle"}
}
2. Install the iLOrest utility (Windows or Linux):

3. Use the iLOrest application to initiate the AuxCycle reset a remote server(iLO 4)
Command overview:
login {ilo_ip_address} -u {user} -p {password}
• rawpost auxcycle.json
• logout
• exit
Example (commands entered are bolded and italicized in the example below):

The response to the “rawpost auxcycle.json” command will vary depending on the server state when the command is issued.

Response with the server powered on and an OS running:

• The system has to be powered off to complete this operation.
Response with the server powered off (standby power on / ILO accessible:
• An iLO reset is in progress
• The operation completed successfully.
• Response with an iLO 4 firmware version prior to 2.55, auxiliary power cycle is not supported:
• iLO response with code [400]: The value type is correct, but the format is not supported or the size/length is exceeded

4. If the server is powered on with an OS running, gracefully shut down the OS to engage the Aux Cycle feature. Once the OS has shutdown, the Aux Cycle feature will engage and the iLO will reset.

5. Following the iLO reset, log into the iLO Remote Console to observe the server powering on and booting into the OS.

NOTE: Products sold prior to the November 1, 2015 separation of Hewlett-Packard Company into Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company and HP Inc. may have older product names and model numbers that differ from current models.
