Release Date: 2018-05-03

Last Updated: 2018-05-15

DESCRIPTION

HPE Synergy Software Release with HPE Composer version 4.00.07.02 , HPE Synergy Image Streamer 4.00.04 and Synergy Custom SPP 2018.03.20180508 provides key updates containing defect fixes and new enhancements for HPE Synergy compute and infrastructure components, primarily based on SPP 2018.03.0.

The HPE Synergy Custom SPP 2018.03.20180508 contains updated HPE Synergy 2820C/3820C CNA operating system drivers for VMware ESXi that are not contained in the HPE custom ESXi ISO images, the HPE Software Delivery Repository, or the VMware web site. The drivers deliver critical fixes and must be installed using alternative methods. The HPE Synergy Custom SPP also contains updated drivers for Windows and Linux.

SCOPE

HPE Synergy Composers and HPE Synergy Gen9 and Gen10 Compute Modules.

RESOLUTION

The following steps are described in Best Practices for HPE Synergy Firmware and Driver Updates document and should be performed prior to installing the drivers:

  1. Install or upgrade the HPE Synergy Composers and Image Streamers
  2. Upgrade the infrastructure firmware
  3. Upgrade the compute module firmware
  4. If required, install or upgrade VMware ESXi on the compute modules

Install or upgrade the HPE Synergy 2820C/3820C CNA operating system drivers for VMware ESXi using either VMware Update Manager (VUM) or the VMware ESXCLI commands.

The process for updating the Windows and Linux drivers is described in the Best Practices for HPE Synergy Firmware and Driver Updates document.

Obtaining the ESXi driver

The HPE Synergy 2820C/3820C CNA operating system drivers for VMware ESXi are available from either the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center or delivered on the HPE Synergy Custom SPP 2018.03.20180508. In order to copy the driver file from the HPE Synergy Custom SPP image, mount the ISO and copy the following ZIP file to a temporary location:

  • For ESXi 6.0u3 = ...\packages\cp035314.zip
  • For ESXi 6.5u1 = ...\packages\cp035313.zip

The file downloaded from the Support Center is the same file that is delivered on the custom SPP and the instructions for installing or updating the driver are the same.

Installing the driver

There are four methods available to install the driver:

  • To install the bundle using VUM, manually copy the offline bundle to the local VMware bundle repository. Add the bundle to a VUM Baseline. Use VUM to apply the contents of the downloaded bundle to the host. When using a local depot, there is no need of internet access from VUM.
  • To install the bundle using ESXCLI, manually copy the specific bundle to either the local management console or the host (such as a shared datastore). Use ESXCLI commands to deploy the bundle to the host. Note that the full path name must be used when executing an ESXCLI command. For more information, see

    www.vmware.com/support/pubs Non-HPE site

    .
  • Use VMware vSphere Image Builder to customize the image profile by adding or removing bundles (including connecting to HPE Online Depot). For example:

Connect to HPE Online Depot using the Image Builder PowerCLI command Add-EsxSoftwareDepot to vibsdepot.hpe.com, and then add the HPE-specific bundles using the Add-EsxSoftwarePackage command.

  • For HPE Synergy Gen9 servers only, use HPE OneView for VMware vCenter or HPE OneView with HPE Smart Update Tools for VMware ESXi.

HPE Smart Update Tools For VMware ESXi User Guide

    .
  • For VMware 6.7, the ESXCLI method is the most highly recommended.

Unpacking the driver components

The VMware driver components in the Synergy custom SPP or from the HPE Support Center are delivered in a ZIP file. This ZIP file is not directly consumable by VMware tools mentioned in the "Installing the driver" section. You must unzip the HPE ZIP file to retrieve the VMware offline bundle. Bundles obtained directly through the HPE Online Depot using VUM do not need additional steps. For example, the HPE ZIP file containing the offline bundle driver package for ESXi 6.0U3 is:

Use the lowest level ZIP file shown to load into VUM or with the ESXICLI commands. See www.vmware.com/support/pubs Non-HPE site for the specific ESXCLI commands, depending on where the offline bundle ZIP file is located.

If the servers were deployed using VMware host profiles, here is an example from Upgrade or Update a Host with Image Profiles Non-HPE site :

esxcli software profile update --
depot=file:///<path_to_ZIPfile>/<ZIPfile> --profile=profile_name

The following example may also be used (e.g. for servers not deployed using host profiles). The commands described in Update ESXi Hosts by Using Zip Files  Non-HPE site are used to install the delivered offline bundle for ESXi 6.0U3 and upgrade the appropriate driver components:

# esxcli software vib update --depot=/tmp/QLG-bnx-6.0-offline_bundle-8174539.zip

Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.

Process considerations

The following actions need to be planned in the context of the Overview of the ESXi Host Upgrade Process Non-HPE site depending on whether the process starts with an existing host or are installing a new host image.

  • Enable ssh access to the hosts
  • Put each host into maintenance mode
  • If a remote depot will be used, enable firewall access for http
  • Reboot and return the host out of maintenance mode

If ESXi host has been upgraded, read the following KB topic from VMware: Enabling and Disabling Native Drivers in ESXi 6.5 Non-HPE site . It is not required to follow the KB if a new host was installed using the HPE custom ESXi images.

If there are issues upgrading the ESXi 6.5 driver, also see this HPE Engineering Notice: HPE Network Adapters - Driver Update And Replacement Are Required From bnx2x To The Native qfle3 Driver Version 1.0.60.0 On HPE ProLiant Servers Running VMware ESXi 6.5 And Configured With Certain Network Adapters .

Note: The notice above is describing an earlier version; however, the process and commands are still relevant.
