Original Document Release.

Beginning February 5, 2018, the net-bnx2x driver will no longer be supported on HPE ProLiant servers running VMware ESXi 6.5 and configured with any of the network adapters listed in the Details section below. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) will support the net-bnx2x driver on VMware ESXi 6.0 only.

All VMware ESXi 6.5 customers currently running the net-bnx2x driver will need to replace and update from the bxn2x driver to the native qfle3 driver version 1.0.60.0.

All future development, fixes and enhancements, for VMware ESXi 6.5 are found in the qfle3 driver. VMware ESXi 6.0 customers can continue using the net-bnx2x driver.

DETAILS

Any HPE server running VMware ESXi 6.5 with the net-bnx2x driver version 2.713.30.v60.9 (contained in the HPE QLogic NX2 10/20GbE Multifunction Drivers for VMware vSphere 6.0/6.5 version 2017.10.06), and configured with any of the following network adapters is affected:

  • HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 530SFP+ Adapter
  • HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 530T Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 533FLR-T Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534FLR-SFP+ Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534M Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 536FLB Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 630FLB Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 630M Adapter
  • HPE NC532m Dual Port 10GbE Multifunction BL-c Adapter
  • HPE StoreFabric CN1100R 10GBASE-T Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE StoreFabric CN1100R Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE Synergy 2820C 10Gb Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE Synergy 3820C 10/20Gb Converged Network Adapter

To replace and update from the bxn2x driver to the native qfle3 driver version 1.0.60.0, enable the native driver and perform the following steps:

  1. Run the following command to verify the current version of the qfle3 driver:
    >esxcli software vib list | grep qfle3
  2. If the installed qfle3 driver is prior to version 1.0.60.0
(contained in the HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for VMware vSphere 6.5 version 2018.02.12); download and update the qfle3 driver version 1.0.60.0, available at the following URL:
  3. Update the firmware on the adapter if needed. Run the following command to verify the current version of the firmware:
    >esxcli network nic get -n <vmnicX>

    • Notes:
      • Replace "X" in the command above with the adapter on which it is intended to verify the firmware version.
      • Regarding reading the firmware version; the output from the above command will display a "FW" and "BC" version. "BC" is the "Boot Code version" and should match the version located in the "Release Notes" of the component pack.
      • If the version of the adapter firmware is verified using iLO, iLO will display the "Combo Image" value. The "Combo Image" can also be viewed from the "Release Notes" tab.
      • After checking the firmware version, if the firmware is old, then update to the HPE QLogic NX2 Online Firmware Upgrade Utility for VMware version 1.20.14, available at the following URL:
  4. If the driver and firmware were updated, reboot the server before moving to the next step.
  5. Ensure the qfle3 driver/module is enabled and ready to load on the next reboot. Run the following command to view if the net-bnx2x driver or the qfle3 driver "Is Loaded" and/or "Is Enabled":
    >esxcli system module list | more

    • Notes:
      • If the system is using the net-bnx2x module rather than the qfle3 module, then the net-bnx2x module will be listed with "Is Loaded" = "true" and "Is Enabled" = "true; and the qfle3 module will be listed as "Is Loaded" = "false" and "Is Enabled" = "false".
      • If the qfle3 driver is set to "false" and "false", then run the following command to enable the qfle3 driver:
        >esxcli system module set --enabled=true --module=qfle3
  6. After enabling the driver, reboot the server and the qfle3 driver will load against the adapter on the next boot. There is no need to disable the net-bnx2x driver.
  7. After rebooting the system, verify if the adapter is using the qfle3 driver rather than the net-bnx2x driver by performing the following command:
    >esxcli network nic list
  8. If all the steps were performed correctly, the HPE QLogic based adapter is now using the qfle3 driver rather than the net-bnx2x driver.

Important:

  • To know more about enabling the native qfle3 driver, refer to the following VMware KB article:

    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2147565 Non-HPE site

  • By default, VMware ESXi 6.5 already has a native qfle3 driver module installed, but the native qfle3 driver is disabled/unused in HPE custom VMware ESXi 6.5 images built before February 2018.
  • Starting with the February 2018 release of the HPE custom VMware ESXi 6.5 image, the net-bnx2x driver is no longer embedded in the image and the native qfle3 driver is enabled by default. Using this image and choosing the "Install" option will avoid the need to switch from the net-bnx2x driver to the qfle3 driver since a new installation will only include the qfle3 driver which is now enabled. Note: An "upgrade" to this image may keep the previous configuration and leave the qfle3 driver disabled.
  • The HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for VMware vSphere 6.5 version 2018.02.12 contains an offline bundle and within the offline bundle are multiple VIBs. Do not just install the individual qfle3 VIB; but install the component pack or the offline bundle. Installing either the component pack or the offline bundle will install all the VIBs. The offline bundle contains the following VIBS:
    • qfle3 Version 1.0.60.0
    • qcnic Version 1.0.10.0
    • qfle3i Version 1.0.13.0
    • qfle3f Version 1.0.45.0
