Unmapping Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) in a target storage system might result in a purple diagnostic screen, also known as Purple Screen of Death (PSOD) on VMware ESXi 5.5, 6.0, or 6.5.

When a LUN is unmapped in the target storage system, the I/O's in transit, and possibly in the target queue, are terminated by the target causing frame drops. The frame drop message is very generic in the host kernel log and can be triggered from a large number of different sources. The frame drop messages coincide with unmapping LUNS in the target storage system.

Example:

WARNING: iodm: vmk_IodmEvent:193: vmhba3: FRAME DROP event has been observed 400 times in the last one minute. This suggests a problem with Fibre Channel link/switch!

The driver uses the Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) residual byte field when reporting the frame drop event to VMware's I/O Device Management (IODM) layer.

The storage system reports the residual byte field is not valid, but still provides a value. The driver passes the invalid residual byte value to the VMware IODM layer, which results in a Purple Diagnostic Screen.

This issue was only investigated on an EMC VPLEX storage system but could occur on other storage systems that respond the same way.

The updated driver validates the enablement of an IODM event notification prior to raising any IODM events, thus sending the correct residual byte value.

SCOPE

VMware ESXi 5.5:

This issue might affect driver versions prior to 11.1.183.641.

VMware ESXi 6.0:

This issue might affect driver versions prior to 11.1.183.641, Fibre Channel (FC): 11.4.249.0 or Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE): 11.4.1231.0.

VMware ESXi 6.5:

This issue might affect driver versions prior to 11.1.257.1, FC: 11.4.249.0 or FCoE: 11.4.1231.0.

RESOLUTION

VMware ESXi 5.5

Upgrade to driver version 11.1.183.641 or newer. Install the latest firmware that matches the 11.1 series driver. Upgrading to driver version 11.1.183.641 does not include a specific matching firmware update.

VMware ESXi 6.0

Upgrade to driver version 11.1.183.641 or newer. Install the latest firmware that matches the 11.1 series driver. Upgrading to driver version 11.1.183.641 does not include a specific matching firmware update.

For adapters that are supported on the newer 11.2 or 11.4 series drivers, upgrade to FC version 11.4.249.0, or FCoE version 11.4.1231.0 or newer driver. FC version 11.4.249.0, and FCoE version 11.4.1231.0 drivers. Be sure to also install the matching 11.4 firmware.

VMware ESXi 6.5

Upgrade to driver version 11.1.257.1 or newer. Install the latest firmware that matches the 11.1 series driver. Upgrading to driver version 11.1.257.1 does not include a specific matching firmware update.

For adapters that are supported on the newer 11.2 or 11.4 series drivers, upgrade to FC version 11.4.249.0, or FCoE version 11.4.1231.0 or newer driver. FC version 11.4.249.0, and FCoE version 11.4.1231.0 Be sure to also install the matching 11.4 firmware.

Highly recommended: Upgrade Server System ROM and iLO to April 2017 Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) release or newer to assure compatibility. Mixing new adapter driver and firmware with older server System ROM and iLO has not been qualified.

At the time of this writing, the following adapters are not supported by the 11.2 or 11.4 series drivers and must use the 11.1 series driver for VMware ESXi 5.5, 6.0, and 6.5:

  • HPE NC553m 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric Adapter
  • HPE NC553i 10Gb 2-port FlexFabric Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE CN1100E Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554M Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLR-SFP+ Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLB Adapter
  • LPe1205 8Gb Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter for c-Class BladeSystem

  2. Click Drivers & Software.
  3. Select your operating system.
  4. Select and then expand the driver.
  5. Download the FC or FCoE driver.

Only the versions listed or posted by HPE are supported. Versions listed or posted by other companies might not be supported by HPE.
