Original document release

Red Hat and SUSE kernels with the software-side mitigation fix for the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities (CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5754) did not boot on HPE Superdome Flex and HPE MC990 X servers or SGI UV architectures with the initial fixes that came from Red Hat and SUSE.

NOTE: Superdome X is not affected by this OS boot issue.

SCOPE

Any HPE Superdome Flex servers, HPE MC990 X servers, and SGI UV3000, SGI UV300, SGI UV30EX, SGI UV2000, UV1000, or UV100.

RESOLUTION

HPE has worked with Red Hat and SUSE to address this. Errata/updated kernels that boot on these servers and architectures are available for RHEL and SLES.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP3 kernel-default-4.4.114-94.11.3 (or later) will boot on these architectures. These kernels are available from SUSE.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 kernel-3.10.0-693.17.1.el7 (or later) will boot on these architectures. These kernels are available from Red Hat.

Released kernels for older revisions of Red Hat and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server that have Extended Update Support from Red Hat(EUS), Long Term Service pack Support from SUSE (LTSS), and other longer-term support plans should come from Red Hat and SUSE. Customers who obtained SUSE PTFs or Red Hat Hotfixes for this issue are advised to update to generally-released kernels.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 100HZ kernels for large SGI UV configurations (SGI patch11479, patch11480) are available from HPE support.

This advisory will be updated when additional solutions become available.
