Original Document Release.

On any HPE ProLiant server running Microsoft Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 or Microsoft Windows Server 2016, and configured with any of the network adapters listed in the Scope section below, when the HPE QLogic NX2 Online Firmware Upgrade Utility version 5.1.0.4 (or earlier) is used to perform a firmware upgrade, the upgrade process may fail if the drivers delivered with HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for Windows Server version 7.13.113.0 (or later) are not installed and running on the system. This may also occur when the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) versions 2017.07.1, 2017.07.2 and 2017.10.1 are used to perform the firmware upgrade.

When the upgrade is performed via OneView or Smart Update Manager (SUM), the error text "update returned an error" is displayed. The component install log (cpqsetup.log) will report a result of "an error occurred during the setup process". The firmware utility log file (qlnicfwupg.log) will indicate "library result: 106" and "exiting with code 0". Running the Smart Update Manager (SUM) online that is included with the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) versions 2017.07.1, 2017.07.2 and 2017.10.1 will incorrectly update the firmware first and then have the error.

When this occurs, the network adapters may not be enumerated as expected in the operating system, the system may fail to PXE boot, or the adapters may not be able to be configured or managed.

SCOPE

Any HPE ProLiant server running Microsoft Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 or Microsoft Windows Server 2016, and configured with any of the following network adapters with the HPE QLogic NX2 Online Firmware Upgrade Utility version 5.1.0.4 and HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for Windows Server versions 7.13.104.0 (or later):

  • HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 530SFP+ Adapter
  • HPE Ethernet 10Gb 2-port 530T Adapter
  • HPE Flex-10 10Gb 2-port 530FLB Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 533FLR-T Adapter

  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 534M Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 536FLB Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 4-port 536FLR-T Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 630FLB Adapter
  • HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 630M Adapter
  • HPE StoreFabric CN1100R 10GBASE-T Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE StoreFabric CN1100R Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE Synergy 2820C 10Gb Converged Network Adapter
  • HPE Synergy 3820C 10/20Gb Converged Network Adapter

RESOLUTION

To ensure the firmware utility completes without error, confirm that the HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for Windows Server version 7.13.113.0 (or later) is installed and running on the system prior to updating the firmware. Do not run the Smart Update Manager (SUM) online that is included with Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) versions 2017.07.1, 2017.07.2 and 2017.10.1. Manually update the driver first and then update the firmware.

In the instance where a network adapter is no longer manageable from this condition, replace the network adapters effected and upon setting them up in the environment, check if they have the firmware updated. If the firmware is not updated, install and run the HPE QLogic NX2 10/20 GbE Multifunction Driver for Windows Server version 7.13.113.0 (or later) on the system prior to updating the firmware.

The firmware and driver components are available with the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) versions 2017.07.1, 2017.07.2 and 2017.10.1 at the following URL: www.hpe.com/info/spp

NOTE: In a boot-from-SAN environment, a reboot may be necessary after executing the updated driver component before executing the firmware component.

For Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.03.0

Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2018.03.0 adds the driver version requirement as a dependency for installing the firmware in order to prevent the issue from occurring. In this case, when the driver version at the SPP execution time is not the version 7.13.113.0, the firmware component will list with a dependency failed message on the first SPP launch. While this dependency is not met, the SPP cannot be deployed while the firmware component is kept selected.

Deselect the firmware component on the first SPP launch to update to the correct driver version and then re-run the SPP or execute the firmware component stand-alone component to complete the firmware update.

This advisory will be updated when a new SPP release with the fix becomes available.

NOTE: Products sold prior to the November 1, 2015 separation of Hewlett-Packard Company into Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company and HP Inc. may have older product names and model numbers that differ from current models.
