Release Date: 2016-09-15

Last Updated: 2016-09-15

DESCRIPTION

Data Protector Version 9.07 with Zero Downtime Backup (ZDB) experiences issues when communicating with HPE 3PAR Storage Systems under any of the following circumstances:

  • The initial connection to HPE 3PAR fails, if credentials for 3PAR were added using the following command:

omnidbzdb -diskarray 3Par --ompasswd --add XXXX (where XXXX represents hostname or FQDN)

  • ZDB backups and restores are failing because SMI-S cannot find application/backup client hostname on 3PAR due to case sensitivity, when comparing 3PAR configured hostnames with hostnames provided from DNS.

Symptoms:

  • SMI-S cannot connect to 3PAR Storage Systems causing backups / restores to fail with the following error message:

    [Major] From:

    SMISA@backup_hostname.domain.com

"SMISA" Time: TIME [ 236:51 ] Failed to resolve a storage volume on the host. Storage volume: VOLUME NAME

  • SMI-S cannot present replica to backup host, due to case sensitive mismatch, causing backups to fail with the following error message:

    [Major] From:

    SMISA@backup_hostname.domain.com

"SMISA" Time: TIME [236:51] Failed to resolve a storage volume on the host. Storage volume: REPLICA NAME

SCOPE

All supported Data Protector ZDB clients patched with Data Protector Version 9.07 are affected by this issue.

RESOLUTION

Apply one of the following options to resolve this issue:

Option 1: Execute the following CLI commands on the Data Protector Cell Server:

  • Remove existing 3PAR credentials configured as hostname/FQDN using the following command:

omnidbzdb -diskarray 3Par --ompasswd --remove XXXX

  • Add a new set of credentials for HPE 3PAR using the following command:

omnidbzdb -diskarray 3Par --ompasswd --add XXXX
(where XXXX represents the 3PAR IP address)

Option 2: Contact HPE Technical Spport and ask for Hot Fix “DP0907_b109_QCCR2A69014_HF1”, which is able to communicate with the 3PAR array using both the hostname and IP address.

IMPORTANT: Due to the case sensitive comparison between hostnames (as configured on 3PAR) and how the hostname is seen on the DNS, all host identifiers on HPE 3PAR must be written in lowercase letters.

The environment configuration change can be done using the HPE 3PAR management console or using the following 3PAR CLI command:

sethost -name new_hostname_lowercase_only OLD_HOSTNAME_mixedLETTTERS
