An HP ProLiant Gen9 server may stop responding and, on the reboot, display the following 1719 POST error message:

1719-Slot 0 Drive Array - A controller failure event occurred prior to this power-up. (Previous lock up code = 0x13)

This issue will occur with any ProLiant Gen9 server and a compatible Smart Array Controller or Smart Host Bus Adapter (HBA) with Firmware Version 3.02, Version 3.00 (or earlier). This issue will occur as a result of an anomaly when multiple threads attempt to access the same memory at the same time.


Any of the following Smart Array Controllers or Host Bus Adapters supported by HP ProLiant Gen9 servers:

  • HP H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HP H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HP H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HP H244br Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HP H246br Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • HP Smart Array P244br Controller
  • HP Smart Array P246br Controller
  • HP Smart Array P440 Controller
  • HP Smart Array P440ar Controller
  • HP Smart Array P441 Controller
  • HP Smart Array P741m Controller
  • HP Smart Array P840 Controller
  • HP Smart Array P840ar Controller
  • HP Smart Array P841 Controller


To resolve this issue, upgrade the Smart Array/HBA Firmware to Version 3.56 by performing the following steps:

  1. Click on the following link:

  2. Enter product name, such as "Smart Array xxxx" (where xxxx in the model number) in the "Product Name" box and click Go. Select the link from the results.
  3. Click the link for "Get drivers, software & firmware."
  4. Select the appropriate link under "Results from all HPE products."
  5. Select the appropriate operating system.
  6. Click on category "Firmware - Storage Controller."
  7. Locate, download, and install Smart Array xxxx or Host Bus Adapter Firmware Version 3.56 (or later).
NOTE: If the firmware update fails due to a controller lockup (POST Error Message 1719), reboot the server and retry the firmware update.
