The Windows installer must load the AHCI drivers to install Windows Server 2003 in AHCI mode (as the BIOS default); however, the AHCI drivers are not included with the HP ProLiant 100-series G6/G7 servers or other ProLiant servers that use the Easy Set-up CD version 1.0(B) or in HP Insight Control server deployment.
When installing Windows Server 2003 operating system in AHCI mode using the Easy Set-up CD version 1.0(B) or using HP Insight Control server deployment, the following blue screen error message will be displayed:
STOP 0x0000007B error message (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE)
SCOPE
Any ProLiant server using Easy Set-up CD version 1.0(B) or HP Insight Control server deployment when installing Windows Server 2003 operating system in AHCI mode (as the BIOS default).
RESOLUTION
As a workaround, the SATA Mode in the System BIOS can be changed from AHCI to "Compatible" before installing Windows Server 2003 on the server.
Note: The System Configuration tasks in the HP Insight Control server deployment software can be used to change the System BIOS value.
To run a System Configuration task on a ProLiant 100-series server, perform the following steps:
- Create a new conrep input file and place on the Deployment Server under <InstallPath>\hpfeatures\hw-proliant directory. The conrep input file should contain the following lines:

<Section name="Q_PCI_SATA_MODE">Compatible</Section>
</Conrep>
An existing HP-provided conrep input file may be used as a template.
- Edit the Run Script - Capture System Configuration or Run Script - Deploy System Configuration task.
- Replace the inputfile= assignment with the new conrep input file created in Step 1.
- Replace the definitionfile= assignment file with the appropriate ProLiant 100-series server model definition file.
Several definition files are provided on the Deployment Server under the following path:
<InstallPath>\hpfeatures\hw-proliant\bin directory.
Definition files can also be found on hp.com for each ProLiant servers web page and copied into the bin directory.
Important: Definition files that are associated with SmartStart Scripting Toolkit 8.60 or later must be used, these definition files resolve a problem associated with the conrep input file section name. Insight Control Server Deployment 6.2.0 includes SmartStart Toolkit Version 8.60.

The Intel AHCI driver for Windows Server 2003 corrects the issue. The Intel AHCI driver for Windows Server 2003 can be downloaded from the Intel website at the following URL:

At the Intel link above, perform the following steps to obtain the Intel AHCI driver:
- Select the appropriate operating system.
- Select the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (AHCI) driver and click "Download."
After downloading the driver from the Intel website, perform the following actions:
- Re-start the operating system installation from the beginning.
- During the text-mode phase of the setup process, the Windows installation will pause briefly and prompt the user to press F6. The AHCI driver can be installed at this time.
- Follow the instructions to install the Intel AHCI driver provided in the Intel Read Me and Release Notes for the driver.
