When applying an HP Virtual Connect server profile, Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.4x will automatically enable SR-IOV in the BIOS of HPE c-Class server blades which have the SR-IOV disabled and one or more SR-IOV capable Converged Network Adapters installed. This may disrupt network connections for the server by causing changes to the PCI NIC enumeration when the server is rebooted.

The following displays the network interfaces before enabling SR-IOV in the system BIOS:

After enabling SR-IOV in the system BIOS, the network interface will change and enumerate as follows:

The following list of SR-IOV Modes and Type settings for the VCM will automatically enable “SR-IOV” in the BIOS while applying a Server Profile:

Simplified Mode

  • SR-IOV Type: Default

Advanced Mode

  • SR-IOV Type: Disabled
  • SR-IOV Type: Custom
  • SR-IOV Type: Auto

SCOPE

Any HPE c-Class BladeSystem running Virtual Connect Firmware 4.4x with one or more SR-IOV capable Converged Network Adapters (CNA) and any of the following modules:

  • HPE Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module
  • HPE Virtual Connect FlexFabric 10Gb/24-port Module
  • HPE Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D Module
  • HPE Virtual Connect FlexFabric-20/40 F8

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by upgrading to Virtual Connect (VC) Firmware Version 4.50.

Before upgrading to VC Firmware Version 4.50, ensure the following conditions are checked and the appropriate action taken.

If a Profile has the SR-IOV Type as Default, Auto, or Custom, and the System BIOS has SR-IOV in a disabled state (which was manually performed by the Server Administrator), upgrading to VC 4.50 will automatically enable SR-IOV in the System BIOS. The recommended action is to keep the setting consistent between the System BIOS and Profile; then proceed with the upgrade.

Perform the following steps to obtain the latest Virtual Connect firmware version:

  1. Click on the following link:

    http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc

  2. Type in Virtual Connect Module name, for example "HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Module" on "Select an HPE product" and click Go.
  3. Click on the "Download options" tab and click on "Get drivers, software & firmware" link.
  4. Select the appropriate operating system.
  5. Click on the category "Firmware-Blade Infrastructure".
  6. Locate, download, and install HP BladeSystem c-Class Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.50, dated 16 May 2016 (or the latest version).

As a workaround:

Re-configure the Network Settings that are impacted.

OR

Whenever a server profile is applied and the server is rebooted:

  1. Disable SR-IOV manually in the System BIOS (as shown below):
Launch RBSU by pressing "F9" while booting =>Select "Advanced Options" => Select "SR-IOV" =>Select "Disabled" =>Press "F10" to save and exit:
  2. Start the operating system.
